Director, Henry M. Jackson School and Stanley D. Golub Chair in International Studies

The University of Washington (UW) seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and adept organizational leader to serve as the next Director of the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies. A unique multidisciplinary school whose scope ranges across area studies, the social sciences, and arts and humanities, the Jackson School is internationally recognized for advancing the understanding of and deep engagement in world issues, languages, and cultures. The Jackson School is dedicated to preparing students to become engaged global citizens and drivers of positive social change, and to conducting research and disseminating knowledge to inform public discussions on global issues. Working in collaboration with an exceptional faculty, staff, and student body, in one of the most globally minded and progressive regions and universities in the country, the Director will strive to take the Jackson School to new levels of excellence and impact.

Founded in 1909, the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies is one of the oldest and largest schools in the country to offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in international and area studies and is dedicated to teaching, research, and public scholarship that impacts nations, communities, and individuals. Its 42 faculty members, over 50 staff, and 21 programs and centers (six of which are recipients of the prestigious Title VI federal program at the U.S. Department of Education) offer a vibrant and broad intellectual environment inside the classroom and to the broader public. The Director will continue to build upon the Jackson School’s rich history and unique institutional assets and lead the School through its next iteration of growth and distinction. In doing so, the Director will craft a collaborative vision and sharpen the School’s identity; deepen the School’s organizational cohesion; further enhance academic excellence; grow financial resources and make strategic investments; and enhance and elevate the School’s visibility, reach, and impact.

Successful candidates will bring creative intellect, a global perspective, a track record of inspiring and effective management, experience with responsible stewardship of revenue and resource development, and an unambiguous commitment to cultivating diverse, equitable, and inclusive environments. Strategic thinking, entrepreneurial energy, and excellent communication skills will be essential to success. A terminal degree is required and a PhD in international studies or a related field is strongly preferred. Candidates should have a record of successful scholarship, teaching, and experiences that would qualify them to hold a tenured faculty position.
