Associate Director, Internships and Experiential Learning
The Student Career Counselor/ Associate Director, Internships & Experiential Learning provides professional development programming to students and SAIS alumni; manages the non-credit “Professional Skills Courses”, oversees the production of the annual Employment Outcomes Report and Internship report, manages the Summer Internship Fund (SIF); oversees internal and external communications for the Office of Global Careers, serves on the SAIS Professional Development Committee (PDC); oversees the SAIS Long-Term Mentoring program; and maintains ongoing relationships with alumni and employers.
1. Manage the non-credit “Professional Skills Course Series” offered by Global Careers on the Washington, DC campus and coordinate online skills courses for all three campuses.
- Conduct surveys and market research to determine course offerings and develop curriculum.
- Identify and recruit instructors to teach courses.
- Promote the program to students and alumni.
- Manage all administrative aspects of the program including the collection of syllabi, scheduling of classes, booking of rooms and registration of students for courses.
- Collect course evaluations and devise retention strategies.
- Track related-expenses (i.e., materials, advertising cost); set and oversee budget.
- Liaise with registrar and academic departments regarding course completions.
2. Coordinate the data collection and production of an annual Employment Outcomes Report.
- Create and disseminate employment survey to graduates.
- Follow-up to achieve high rate of completion.
- Analyze results and write report
- Work with graphic designer to produce and print final report
- Promote and market the report to various constituencies
3. Oversee internal and external communications for the Global Careers Office to ensure consistency in messaging and branding.
- Create and update website content.
- Coordinate content for website “Tiles” among all three campuses.
- Write and distribute summer newsletters for recent graduates.
- Edit internal and external communications as needed.
- Draft headline articles for the Global Careers Weekly newsletter.
4. Manage the SAIS Summer Internship Fund (SIF).
- Consult with the Professional Development Committee to establish policies and criteria for eligible applicants; with Operations and Development regarding available funding; with Academic Departments regarding concentration awards; and with Student Life regarding travel procedures.
- Create all documents required for application and upload materials to Handshake. Create Google documents to track applications.
- Hold information sessions on SIF and promote the program in Handshake and in the Global Careers Weekly email.
- Process all Washington and HNC applications and send award letters.
- Determine award amounts and funding sources for SIF recipients. Work with Bryan Regalado regarding payroll procedures.
- Ensure students meet SIF completion requirements.
5. Oversee the collection of summer internship evaluations and prepare an annual Summer Internship report, posted to Handshake.
6. Track and maintain office statistics.
7. Develop collaborative relationships with faculty, department coordinators, Associate Deans and members of the Development and Alumni Affairs offices.
8. Serve on the SAIS Professional Development Committee. Help prepare agenda, take minutes, and communicate effectively with committee members.
9. Counsel students on all aspects of their professional development, including clarification of career goals, providing current information on specific career fields and employment trends, developing effective documents (e.g., resumes, cover letters) and provide advice on conducting effective employment searches.
- Counsel students on their professional development opportunities including skills courses, mentoring, and summer internships
10. Develop career information and employment related programs for students and alumni, to include but not limited to funding for unpaid internships, leadership development, and other special programs.
Computer & Other Special Needs for Position
Computer and standard office equipment is used on a daily basis. Must have excellent computer skills (Word, Excel and Access) and ability to quickly learn other programs as needed.

Independent decisions on how to best meet a student’s or alumna/us’ professional development needs. Independently manage professional development programs and events including, but not limited to skills courses, leadership development programming, and mentoring programs. Recommend priorities for maintaining relationships with sector-specific employers and alumni. Recommend development of new career programming for students and alumni. Maintain and develop online and hard copy, sector-specific resources.
Internal & External Contacts
External contacts: Frequent contact with alumni and donors for the purpose of organizing professional development and experiential learning events, and to assist the Development Office in obtaining funding for internships. As needed, contact with associations and organizations for the purpose of professional development in the field of career services and student affairs. As needed, contact with prospective employers for the purpose of tracking job-market trends and maintaining sector-specific knowledge including job requirements, desired skill sets, hiring procedures and salaries.
Internal contacts: Daily contact with students and alumni, either in a counseling, one-on-one role or in teaching career courses and workshops. Regular contact with faculty and program coordinators, assessing needs of students from various departments and coordinating career services programming with academic units. Regular contact with staff members in Student Affairs to coordinate career services plans and programs. Ongoing contact with Development and Alumni Affairs staff to share information regarding alumni and programs to support the SAIS development effort.
The ideal candidate is comfortable with co-working and flexible work arrangements. Our educators work within multiple offices and spaces on campus. Rather than assigning office or desk spaces to our teams, we have modernized our approach and assigned laptops and cell phones and expect that our teams can work from anywhere for the purpose of scaling our impact across the institution. For this model to work, the ideal candidate must present excellent skills in relationship development and engaging audiences in groups and via social media and digital outlets. The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, data and outcomes driven, strong in planning and execution, comfortable leading programs and interventions with groups, and enjoys developing relationships and connections with multiple stakeholders at once. Our new vision is focused on scalability of resources and services and does not utilize a one-on-one appointment model. For this transformation to work, traditional one-on-one counseling and coaching services are taking a backseat to a culture of scalable programs and interventions. Educators who thrive as counselors, advisors, and coaches and do not enjoy the intense focus on scalability and metrics may not be the best fit for this organization. The ideal candidate is an effective user of social media and digital outlets to engage multiple audiences, strengthen individual and organizational brand, scale impact, and influence public opinion. Candidates who are not comfortable with the utilization of social media in a professional environment may not be a good fit for this organization.
Skills & Knowledge
- Thorough knowledge of career development theory and applications with special emphasis on trends in international employment across all sectors.
- Ability to administer and interpret relevant career development diagnostic tools.
- Strong counseling and training skills.
- Ability to develop new curricula and teaching materials for a variety of career related courses and workshops.
- Demonstrated ability to organize projects and events in a well-planned and effective manner.
- Well-developed public relations, speaking and writing skills required to effective represent SAIS; especially in marketing SAIS students to new employers.
- Writing and editing skills necessary in handling correspondence and revision of office handouts.
- Familiarity with Word, Excel, the Internet and additional software utilized in the Career Development profession.
- Openness to learn new technologies for career development.
- Team player and demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative workplace environment.
- Flexibility with hours, especially during periods when programs may extend outside of regular work hours, including limited weekend work.
- An international background and cross-cultural sensitivity to international employment issues and sectors.
- Three years of experience in business or higher education, employer development or related experience required. Three to five years of experience preferred.
- Master’s degree required.
