Broadening My Expertise in Policy Making
Juliane was drawn to the Master of International Public Policy (MIPP) program because she believed it was an excellent opportunity to strengthen her knowledge beyond Europe and to gain a more global perspective on international policy making. Apart from the school’s outstanding faculty, Juliane hoped that the MIPP program would also provide her the opportunity to learn from fellow students and their professional experiences.
Prior to attending SAIS, Juliane was employed at the Permanent Representation of Austria to the EU in Brussels. Before that, she spent several years working as a Special Advisor to the Austrian Minister of Education and as a Project Manager at the Austrian Trade Commission in Barcelona.
Now a student at SAIS, Juliane didn’t expect the school’s on-site COVID-19 testing center (required for anyone attending in-person classes) to become one of her most cherished SAIS experiences. During this unprecedented time, it was very reassuring to have a testing team that was incredibly friendly, helpful and understanding. In addition, Juliane has enjoyed participating in the bi-weekly US-China Dialogue, which provides a great platform for both American and Chinese students to get to know each other, interact and exchange thoughts on a broad variety of topics, such as cultural, historic, economic and political questions. Outside of SAIS, Juliane volunteers with the Arlington Free Clinic, where she provides administrative support to the vaccine clinic and functions as an interpreter for Spanish speaking patients.
After SAIS, Juliane is certain that the MIPP degree will broaden her expertise in policy making in every possible sense of the word. She has a well-established academic background in business and politics, combined with years of work experience in different international environments. But the SAIS experience is unique; only at SAIS has she had the chance to connect to exceptional faculty and students alike, to gain distinct insight into US politics and study at the forefront of global policy making.
Juliane has always been passionate about public policy, and she is hoping to translate her graduate degree into a career where she can apply her expertise in political economy and development. Having all the hardships and crises of the world in mind, she passionately strives to do her part in making the world a slightly better place.
Lastly, Juliane would like to thank the Fulbright Commission which has ultimately made it possible for her to come to the US and commence her studies at SAIS. She is truly humbled that she had the opportunity to study in Washington DC and to learn from some of the most knowledgeable experts in the field.
