William & Mary

Public Policy Program

Hone your skills. Find your voice. Enact positive change.

Our two-year Master of Public Policy (MPP) is a full-time, on-campus degree program in Williamsburg, Virginia.

An MPP degree from William & Mary prepares students for career placement at all levels of public policy – both in the public sector and in private-sector organizations such as nonprofits, regulated industries, and consulting firms with government clients. However you want to change the world or advance your career, our rigorous program and highly engaged faculty can help make it happen for you.

The MPP curriculum provides both theoretical and applied policy training for students from a variety of educational and career backgrounds. At W&M you’ll study:

  • the institutions and processes of public policy
  • the economic foundations of policy analysis
  • the quantitative and statistical methods required for analyzing policy
  • the intersection of law and public policy
  • specialized policy topics across a wide range of issues (see our current elective offerings)
Solid core classes and flexible electives to fuel your research and career interests

All students follow a core curriculum that gives them a solid foundation in quantitative data analysis, economics, political environment, and law. Outside of the core classes, rather than requiring students to pick one policy issue to specialize in our wide range of electives enables students to target the program to their unique interests and career goals. Students can supplement the MPP with one of several dual degree options through our partnerships with W&M’s law, business, education, operations research, and marine science graduate programs, and earn two degrees in less time.

Where Theory Meets the Real World

Through the required summer internship and work with businesses and organizations across the country and abroad, students apply their knowledge and help to develop policy solutions. All MPP students take the Policy Research Seminar (PRS) course in their second year and work in small teams for real-world clients in the community, putting into action the analytic skills and tools they developed in the first-year courses.

The W&M Difference:
What makes us so special?
Small Size, Generous Financial Assistance

Our relatively small classes allow unmatched access to faculty members and encourage a strong sense of community within the program. Most students receive merit-based assistantships (a mix of tuition credits and stipends) that help to considerably reduce the cost of tuition, fees, and living expenses.

Convenient Access to D.C. & Richmond, VA

Our proximity to Washington, D.C. and our state capital of Richmond allows convenient access to major policymakers, lawmakers, and analysts. Whether through the Washington Program for first-year students or regular Policy Dialogues in DC and Richmond, MPP students have many opportunities to directly engage policymakers and practitioners on current policy issues, enabling students to gain a deeper understanding of how policy plays out in the real world and preparing them to take the next step in their own careers.
