Intern - Center for Insights in Survey Research (CISR)

IRI is creating student and employee partnerships that facilitate growth and development of IRI’s future leadership. The intern will support the work of IRI’s Center for Insights in Survey Research (CISR).
This position will start on January 8, 2024 for no more than sixteen (16) weeks and may not be extended. This is a part-time or full-time paid position, at $17.00 per hour, with an expectation of working 20-40 hours per week.

Position Requirements:
-Current student in or recent graduate of an undergraduate or graduate program in Political Science, International Affairs, Research Methodology, Survey Methodology, Statistics, Sociology, Psychology or related field
-Basic understanding of statistics (at least one course)
-Coursework on research methodology (e.g. Survey Methods, Introduction to Survey Sampling etc.) preferred but not required
-Excellent verbal and written skills in English
-Familiarity with Microsoft Office, especially Excel data entry and Microsoft Forms
-Detail-oriented individual with strong organizational skills
-Flexibility to changing situations and priorities
-Experience with SPSS, R or similar statistical software; familiarity with writing R functions preferred but not required.
Primary Functions & Responsibilities:
Approximately 50% of time:
-Assist in performing quality control review on survey data.
-Assist in analysis of survey data and review of analytical products.
-Assist in the preparation of PowerPoint presentations and other analytical deliverables based on division team’s needs and requests.
-Assist in preparing for quantitative research studies, including sampling and instrument design, and codebooks.
-Conceptualize and conduct statistical analyses using IRI’s catalog of historic polling data; write up findings for blog posts on IRI.org or other publications.
Approximately 25% of time:
-Create custom R functions to automate certain data review checks that are currently being conducted in Excel. Conduct independent research to learn best practices for writing such functions.
Approximately 25% of time:
-As needed, help maintain three databases: for budget of various research studies across the globe, feedback from data collection vendors on IRI’s research procurement processes, and for past performance of research data collection vendors

Learning Outcomes:
-Acquire knowledge of and experience in survey research methodologies, quality assurance procedures, and survey data analysis.
-Acquire knowledge of the survey research cycle from data collection to publication and messaging
-Acquire knowledge of global data collection industry, including budgeting for various types of projects.
-Acquire knowledge of the democracy and governance field of international development in including aspects related to program management, monitoring and evaluation, program and business development, and external affairs.
