Syracuse University’s Maxwell School is the only major school of public affairs integrating its applied professional degree programs with social science scholarship in such fields as political science, economics, geography, and sociology. As a result, Maxwell’s MA in International Relations (MAIR) possesses a uniquely rich combination of interdisciplinary perspectives and practical leadership/management skills. The 40-credit master’s program requires one or more global internships, adding a strong collaborative and experiential component. Together, these attributes give Maxwell’s MAIR graduates an edge in the global job market. While theoretical work draws from across Maxwell’s disciplines, MAIR skills instruction benefits from the faculty and curriculum of Maxwell’s number 1 ranked Master of Public Administration program. (Both the MAIR and MPA are based in the Department of Public Administration and International Affairs.) Maxwell’s MPA is concentrated, intensive, and chiefly focused on the transferable skills of public management and policy analysis, delivering fundamental skills — suitable for jobs in public, nonprofit, and related private sectors; and versatile enough to serve an entire career. Additionally, a 43 credit MA in Public Diplomacy and Global Communications is offered jointly with Syracuse University’s highly acclaimed SI Newhouse School of Public Communications. This 1.5 year program prepares graduates for careers in public communications for governments, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector. Many students enroll in the Joint MPA/IR degree, which efficiently coordinates the best of both programs and can be completed in two years.
