Communications Specialist

The Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS) combines the social sciences, humanities, and professional fields to enhance our understanding of our increasingly interconnected globe. JSIS currently offers seven undergraduate majors, 14 minors, and nine interdisciplinary MA degrees, as well as a fee-based MA in applied international studies, and a uniquely-designed Ph.D. Program. In addition, graduate students have the opportunity to pursue concurrent degrees with programs in business administration, public affairs, law, public health, marine affairs, and forest resources. JSIS is a department in the Social Sciences Division of the UW College of Arts and Sciences.

JSIS has an outstanding opportunity for a Communications Specialist. The Communication Specialist collaborates with the JSIS Programs and Centers and provides design, content creation, and social media for the JSIS programs and events, including publishing to marketing channels. This is a new position that will report to the Director of Communications. Although open until filled, priority application date is January 26, 2024. 

Job Description:

Communications & Publicity (25%)

  • Collaborate with a small team to develop comprehensive publicity plans for each Center event.
  • Draft and oversee email campaigns to promote events and opportunities.
  • Assist in creating appeal letters to donors and other fundraising communications.
  • Generate email newsletters, including text writing, image formatting, and adherence to guidelines using respective email platforms and best practices.

Editorial & Design Support (25%)

  • Ensure compliance with official brand guidelines and supply approved logos and assets to partners.
  • Provide constructive feedback on graphic designers’ work.
  • Execute the production of flyers, brochures, and other assets, either through commission or independent design.

Content Creation (25%)

  • Edit content from students, faculty, and contributors, offering feedback and coordinating revisions.
  • Create article summaries and publish to online channels, including formatting text, images, and hyperlinks.
  • Source appropriate online images, edit images as necessary, and add metadata.
  • Ongoing review of website content.

Social Media 25%

  • Develop engaging weekly posts for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, sharing event information, news, photos, and articles.
  • Monitor and respond to user engagement.
  • Create custom graphics and cropped images as required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Business, International Studies or other related fields.
  • 1 year experience in communications, web applications, and design.

Additionally:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated creativity, organizational ability, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, problem-solve, take initiative, set priorities, and manage multiple projects efficiently.
  • Proficiency in WordPress or ability to quickly learn the platform.
  • Experience in managing social media platforms for business.

Desired

  • Familiarity with brand management activities.
  • Experience in a university setting and familiarity with International Studies.
  • knowledge of HTML and CSS, with experience in customizing WordPress sites.
  • Familiarity with desktop publishing and proficiency in graphic design software, ideally Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Experience using email marketing platforms.
  • Familiarity with brand management activities.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where legal requirements exist.
