Program Officer, North Africa
The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a 501(c)3 grantmaking foundation that receives an annual Congressional appropriation in excess of $310 million and is governed by a private, bipartisan Board of Directors. This unusual arrangement positions NED to play a unique role as America’s leading foundation for freedom, empowering the institution to be nimble, innovative, and risk-taking in support of democratic activists, civil society organizations, independent media, and the NED family core institutes (the International Republican Institute, the National Democratic Institute, the Center for International Private Enterprise, and the Solidarity Center).
We seek a motivated, energetic, organized, and resourceful Program Officer, North Africa who is a mission-oriented team player, and who would be excited to join a fast-paced Program, team. This position is based in Washington, D.C.
Position Summary:
The Program Officer (PO) will assist with the management, administration, development, and expansion of grant programs in the North Africa region. In addition, the PO will support existing grantees and develop prospective grantees.
Responsibilities:
Assist in the evaluation of project proposals.
Draft summaries of proposals to present at quarterly board meetings.
Communicate regularly with existing grantees, often in Arabic and/or French.
Assist in monitoring the work of existing grantees, including review and analysis of any publications or other products.
Track political developments in the North Africa region.
Help organize events to highlight specific democracy-related issues in coordination with the other North Africa program members.
Travel to the region as needed, and occasionally under difficult conditions, to identify and work with potential new grantees and existing grantees.
Qualifications:
Knowledge/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in International Affairs, Political Science, International Development or a related discipline; Master’s degree preferred.
4+ years of experience in democracy-related work is required.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English, Arabic and French are required.
Proficiency in other relevant languages of the region is preferred, but not required.
Proficiency with MS Office is required.
Other Qualifications:
Field experience with NGOs in one or more North Africa countries is preferred.
Knowledge of political issues and trends in the North Africa region.
Regional knowledge of one or more countries in North Africa is essential.
Ability to travel to North African countries as needed.
Authorized to work in the United States.
Competencies:
High degree of organization and initiative.
Experience in grant-making and democratic development is desirable.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
This position is part of the NED Bargaining Unit.
