Media Relations Specialist, Public Affairs

The George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs is one of the world’s leading schools of international affairs in the United States. The position of Senior Media Relations Specialist, Public Affairs will be responsible for planning, developing, and coordinating all public affairs activities of the Elliott School of International Affairs (ESIA) including public events, policy engagement, media relations, and other electronic and print publications, including the School’s digital presence, to enhance the public profile of the School. He/she will serve as the face of the Elliott School events.

This position is primarily responsible for planning and executing the school’s extensive public events programming, trains institute administrators in event planning and execution, and builds and maintains collaborative relationships with external partners to amplify the impact of public affairs activities.

Responsibilities Include:

Serves as main point of contact for the Elliott School signature event series (Ambassadors Forum, Graduation Celebration, etc.) including outreach to external partners, logistics, and event execution.

In coordination with the Director of Public Affairs, develops a strategic communications plan and leverages the Public Affairs staff and resources to meet the school’s outreach and engagement goals.

Working with the university’s Division of External Relations, develops and implements a proactive media engagement plan to enhance the School’s public profile and ensure that newsworthy events and research reach the targeted constituencies.

Participates in supporting the Elliott School’s digital strategy, including the use of the website, social media, and video to achieve overall communications goals.

Assists with production of written materials including briefing, speeches, brochures, website material, media releases, newsletters, and print and electronic advertisements.

Manages the allocated budget for event related public affairs activities maximizing the potential for cost savings and value.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

 

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
