Spring 2022 – East Asia – 38 North Research Internship

As part of the East Asia department at the Henry L. Stimson Center, the 38 North Program seeks a remote intern for the spring term who will focus on research regarding political, economic, and social development on the Korean Peninsula and beyond. Candidates should have a strong interest in the East Asia region, security studies, and big power competition. 38 North provides informed technical and policy analysis on domestic Korean Peninsular issues as well as US policy toward both Koreas.

Responsibilities for the 38 North internships include:

Provide research assistance for program staff on projects and initiatives, including, but not limited to:
Examining issues related to US-South Korea alliance
Assessing and analyzing North Korea’s domestic developments
Conduct regular issue and media tracking of developments regarding North Korea, South Korea, and US policy toward both Koreas;
Attend (virtually) and report on seminars and conferences;
Write memos, briefings, and summaries on key issues and internal meetings; and
Assist in the coordination of program events.

Generally, a strong candidate for this position will have:

A strong interest or academic background in East Asian studies, security studies, international relations, big power competition, and/or the Korean Peninsula
Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work in both research and administrative tasks;
Excellent analytical, research, and writing skills
A record of academic excellence; and
Korean language preferred, but not required.

Applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 30 hours per week. Preference may be given to those available 30+ hours per week for a minimum of 15 weeks.
