Communications and Promotion Manager, Journal of Democracy

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a 501(c)3 grantmaking foundation that receives an annual Congressional appropriation in excess of $310 million and is governed by a private, bipartisan Board of Directors. This unusual arrangement positions NED to play a unique role as America’s leading foundation for freedom, empowering the institution to be nimble, innovative, and risk-taking in support of democratic activists, civil society organizations, independent media, and the NED family core institutes (the International Republican Institute, the National Democratic Institute, the Center for International Private Enterprise, and the Solidarity Center).

We seek a motivated, energetic, organized, and resourceful Communication and Promotion Manager, JoD who is a mission-oriented team player, and who would be excited to join a fast-paced JOD team. This position is based in Washington, D.C.

Position Summary:

The Communication and Promotion Manager will oversee the promotion of the Journal of Democracy and its content. This position will liaise with NED’s communications team to ensure proper coordination and amplification of content to the public. This staffer will be charged with the Journal’s active social media management, promotion of JoD content in newsletters, radio, TV, and podcasts, production and dissemination of promotional emails, and building new partnerships between the Journal and other media platforms.

Responsibilities:

Develop and execute the Journal of Democracy’s communications strategy with an aim to raising the JoD’s profile with the public and key constituencies (e.g., media, academia, civil society, policymakers).
Write and ensure the timely dissemination of JoD press releases and promotional emails to JoD readers, enlarging the readership for the JoD email distribution over time.
Manage the Journal’s social media channels with a goal of growing followership, impact, and audience reach.
Promote JoD content and authors through cooperation with newsletters, radio, TV, and podcast appearances.
Promote the JoD’s content and authors through contacts and cooperation with journalists, civil society, and academic institutions and partners.
Build new partnerships between the JoD and other media platforms for sustained promotion of JoD content.
Oversee the tracking of media mentions, social media engagement, and readership of promotional emails and press releases on an ongoing basis.
Develop strategies and promotional plans for special JoD projects, books, or events as needed.
Develop innovative new approaches for building JoD brand and reach with key audiences.
Work in coordination with NED’s communications team to leverage new opportunities for promotional impact and cooperation.
The level of responsibility and independence in assigned tasks will increase with experience.
Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in International Affairs, relevant area studies, nonprofit administration, or related field is required.
Bachelor’s degree in communications, international affairs, or related area of study required;
4-6 years of work experience with progressively increasing responsibility in the field of communications, public relations, and/or advocacy; and,
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, MailChimp (or a similar email marketing platform), Google Analytics, and various social media content-creation tools/apps;
Sophisticated understanding and experience engaging and executing content promotion via social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram..
Substantial knowledge of global political developments, particularly regarding democratization, advocacy, and civil society, with sound judgment regarding politically sensitive issues and contexts;
Experience in project development, management, and implementation;
Experience in building relationships with journalists, media outlets, and project partners in the United States and abroad;
Proven leadership ability with a profound commitment to teamwork;
Capable of managing multiple tasks under pressure and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment;
High degree of organization and initiative, with attention to detail and the ability to multitask.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
Proficiency in one or more languages, other than English, preferred;
Authorized to work in the United States.
This position is part of the NED Bargaining Unit.
