Director of Development

DUTIES:

-Under the direction of the President & CEO and the Board of Directors, plans, implements and directs Stimson’s fundraising strategies;
-Creates and directs outreach strategies and maintains ongoing communication with current and prospective donors including foundations, governments, corporations, and individuals;
-Cultivates engagement and philanthropic giving among Board of Directors together with the President & CEO, and presents reports on development activities at Board meetings;
-Works with the Board Development Committee Chair to coordinate and set agenda for Committee meetings and provides regular staffing support for -Committee activities;
-Sets strategy for organizational events related to revenue generation including public forums, VIP luncheons, private fundraising dinners, and Board receptions and meetings, among others;
-Advise senior staff in setting and meeting fundraising goals for each program;
-Develops print and digital marketing collateral materials related to fundraising in collaboration with the Director of Strategic Communications; and
-Performs other duties as assigned in keeping with the general nature of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

-Bachelor’s Degree and 7-10 years of progressively responsible development experience;
-Demonstrated success in meeting annual fundraising goals and securing major gifts;
-Previous experience working with high-net-worth individuals and boards of directors;
-Strong background experience and knowledge of solicitation strategies and development communications;
-Demonstrated success in securing corporate donations and developing sponsorship models;
-Experience working in the nonprofit sector;
-Ability to understand, support and communicate the organization’s mission and values;
-Flexible and adaptable style; someone who can positively implement both strategic and tactical fundraising strategies;
-Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationship with others, both internally and externally to achieve the organization’s goals;
-Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;
-Experience planning and executing events of various sizes and formats;
-Exceptional written and oral communication skills;
-Strong interpersonal skills;
-Strong interest in foreign affairs and/or international peace and security issues; and
-Grant writing proficiency.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

-Previous experience within the think tank, policy, research, or international security spheres;
-Familiarity with fundraising platforms such as iWave and Foundation Directory Online;
-Familiarity with CRM platforms such as Salesforce;
-Ability to travel on occasion;
-Experience with capital campaign fundraising.
