Program Assistant, Europe

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a 501(c)3, bipartisan organization that serves as America’s leading foundation for freedom, providing support for democratic activists, civil society organizations, and independent media throughout the world. We seek a dynamic, and savvy Program Assistant, to help strengthen the impact of our work and mission.

Position Summary:

The Program Assistant, (PA) will provide day-to-day administrative and programmatic support to the Europe regional program staff. This position reports to the Senior Director for Europe.

Responsibilities:

Provide general administrative support to the staff of the Europe team.
Receive, process, and distribute incoming proposals and grantee materials.
Respond to general inquiries regarding the proposal process.
Maintain a database of contacts in the region.
Help organize meetings, roundtables, and other events on Europe-related topics.
Provide logistical support for staff and grantee travel.
Provide programmatic support, as appropriate, to the team’s Program Officers, Deputy Director, and Senior Director.
Assist, as appropriate, in preparing proposal summaries, budgets, and related materials for considering and awarding grants to nongovernmental organizations working on democracy assistance programs in the Europe region.
The level of responsibility and independence in assigned tasks will increase with experience.
Other responsibilities and projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in international affairs, political science, international development, history or a related discipline is required.
0-2 years of administrative and/or programmatic experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
Experience in grant making and democratic development is desirable.
Proficient in the use of MS Office Suite.
Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of political and civil society issues in Central, Eastern and/or Southeast Europe.
Fluency (oral and written) in Russian desired; knowledge of a relevant regional language, especially languages used in the Southeast Europe, is desirable.
Related field experience in one or more countries in the region is desirable.
Excellent writing, editorial, and oral communication ability.
Attention to detail, and ability to multi-task.
High degree of organization and initiative.
Works well in a team environment.
Experience working with databases and analyzing statistics is desirable.
Authorized to work in the United States.
