Research Assistant, South Asia Program

The Research Assistant will serve as the Deputy Editor for the South Asia Program’s South Asian Voices (SAV) publication. This role involves working closely with SAV’s network of approximately 400 authors from across South Asia and coordinating the regular publication of policy-driven analysis on South Asia’s strategic and security affairs. The Research Assistant will regularly edit articles for publication on SAV with support from the SAV Managing and Associate editors, organize the SAV publication schedule in consultation with the Managing Editor, and support SAV’s continued growth through online promotion and production of quality content. The Research Assistant will also help advance programmatic objectives by providing administrative, editorial, research, and mentorship support to the team.

DUTIES:
-Serve as Deputy Editor for Stimson Center’s South Asian Voices publication, an online policy platform focused on the politics, economics, and security of South Asia;
-Provide substantive and stylistic feedback to authors based on SAV style and publication guidelines to support in the development of policy relevant articles for an international audience;
-Review regular submissions to SAV and pitch articles to authors to produce timely and quality content;
-Oversee and support the development of long-term projects to be published on South Asian Voices, including SAV series and special initiatives;
-Manage relationships with project stakeholders including funders, relevant analysts, SAV translators and contract editors, and Stimson support staff;
-Support the Managing Editor in other SAV tasks as required;
-Provide editorial and research support to the South Asia Program, and contribute original analysis;
-Deliver administrative support to the South Asia Program, including, but not limited to: preparing funder report, managing event logistics, serving as an event rapporteur, and crafting communications for external audiences.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:
-Demonstrated interest in Asian security issues, deterrence dynamics, and/or nuclear studies;
-B.A. in Political Science, International Relations, or a related field;
-Prior educational and/or professional experience in South Asia and/or editorial experience;
-Ability to work independently and to collaborate with peers in a team environment;
-Demonstrated analytical, research, and writing skills;
-Strong organizational and communication skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines;
-Diplomatic skills and cultural sensitivity;
-A record of academic excellence.

Preferred:
-M.A. in Political Science, International Relations, or a related field;
-Language skills including Hindi, Urdu, Mandarin, or other regional languages;
-Experience with website management, SEO optimization, and analytics tools including WordPress and Google Analytics.
